Unfortunately I don't know the title of this piece or the name of the artist! However...

This piece was a sound installation at the (newly opened) Arcadian shopping centre on Hurst Street, Birmingham. A large empty shop unit was used to house the work. On entry, you received a map of Birmingham on which an interlocking pentagram and pentagon were drawn. The artist had visited the points where lines met, and recorded the sounds in the environment.

The floor of the gallery was marked out with the same geometric pattern, and combined speakers and lights hung from the ceiling at each meeting point of the lines. In case you haven't realised yet, the speakers played the sounds from the co-responding points on the map. Walking across the floor allowed you to take "giant steps" across the city.

Locations included a bus stop outside Mc Donald's on the Bristol Rd and a railway cutting with bird noises and occasional trains.

There was also a modern player piano in the corner - I can't remember any artistic purpose for this, and I wonder if it was displayed as part of a sponsorship deal?
